Portland Propeller Club’s very own Capt Bill Van Voorhis receiving his very derserved award. He was recognized at the National level for his outstanding efforts in his role as VP of Student ports. Capt Bill had 24 students at this years convention held in New Orleans October 2012 and each one took back with them the understanding of what it means to be part of such a great organization. Bill visits maritime schools all over the US and brings the club to them with all the networking information for them to excel in thier career after graduation. I will say i was honored to be sitting at his table with him this past week. The Portland club was in New Orleans represented by Capt Sandy Dunbar, Capt Bill Van Voorhis and Sean Petty. Bill receiving his award and Sandy and Bill both swarn into his newest position on the officers seat at the national level. good times and great company. Well done by both. Congratulations!

About the Club

On November 7, 1927, The Propeller Club of the United States as a national and international organization was formed. In 1932, the Propeller Club began to expand to overseas ports. The national membership comprises a cross section of the maritime industry throughout the United States and in many cities overseas. Today, The Propeller Club is the largest maritime association in the United States and currently has 33 International Ports throughout the world.

The Propeller Club, Port of Portland Maine, received their charter on December 7, 1938. The club has over 135 members, including fleet operators, deck and engine officers, terminal managers, agents, chandlers, members of government, and others. The Club is dedicated to promoting commerce in the Port of Portland. Its central mission is the preservation of deep water berthing within the Port.

The Club is active. We convene a dinner meeting at 1730 on the second Thursday of each month (September through April), at DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant, Commercial Street in Portland. The meeting begins with a social hour followed by dinner. During dinner a guest speaker, often a member of state or local government or an industry figure, speaks on a matter of current interest. In December, we suspend the meeting and enjoy a gala holiday dinner dance at a local country club. In May, the Club celebrates Maritime Day with a luncheon, a guest speaker of national importance and presentation of awards. On the last Wednesday of each month (September through June), the Board of Governors meets at noon for a board meeting, again at DiMillo’s – all members are welcome.
